canine V: Pain Control & Physical Rehabilitation: Comprehensive review and Practical Strategies

A minimum of one elective is required for all participants.

Prerequisites

Participant must:
  • Participant must be a veterinarian, veterinary technician, physical therapist, physical therapist assistant or an actively enrolled student in on of these fields.

Course Description:

This two-day course will expose the participants to fundamental information related to pain, including the principles and physiologic basis of pain management. Participants will review clinical aspects of pain in orthopedic, neurology, soft tissue surgery, and oncology. The various medical aspects of pain management will be presented and practical multimodal strategies will be discussed. The benefits of physical therapy on pain will be presented. Participants will use the knowledge acquired to design the pain management programs of specific patients.

  • How painful are orthopedic problems?
  • How painful are soft tissue problems?
  • How painful are Neurologic problems?
  • How painful is cancer?
  • Strategies used to combat pain.
  • LUNCH
  • Drugs used in pain management – NSAIDS
  • Drugs used in pain management – Narcotics, corticosteroids, local anesthetics, and adjunctive drugs (SMDA antagonics, TCA’s, mixed anticonvulsivants)
  • Nutritional supplements aimed at pain management
  • BREAK
  • Physical therapy and pain
  • Review and discussion

Day 2:

  • Question and answer session
  • Patient assessment; behavior, quality of life, pain-free range of motion, algometers, VAS pain scale
  • Comprehensive strategies
  • BREAK
  • Involving others in pain management
  • Pain management in cat and in other species

  • Case-based review

  • The future of pain control; discussion period and evaluations
